Claimant FAQs and Occupational Therapy Evaluations

1) Why has someone from Rehab Logic been asked to visit me?

We have been asked to assess how your condition is affecting your life, and to find out what services or equipment might assist your recovery. If appropriate, we’ll also discuss any measures that you feel would speed up your return to work.

2) Who will be visiting me?

One of our Occupational Therapists will contact you to arrange an appointment for the assessment or examination. It depends on what part of the country you live in and whether any specialist clinician is required by either your solicitor or the insurer at this stage.

3) Who has asked Rehab Logic to prepare a report on my needs?

It may be your solicitor, the insurers who are dealing with your claim (or their solicitor) – or we may have received what is called a ‘joint instruction’, from both of them. Don’t worry: we always ensure that your solicitor considers a visit to be in your best interests. If you’re still uncertain, why not speak to your solicitor, or one of our lead therapists?

4) Why will the visit take so long?

Because we need to be sure that all your immediate needs have been considered. This means working through a very detailed checklist, before preparing the report.

5) Can a family member or friend stay with me during the assessment?

Of course. Indeed, if your injury has affected your memory, or your ability to speak, we would actively encourage this.

6) Should I arrange for my young children to be cared for by someone else, during the assessment?

Although not essential, you will probably find it less distracting, if a family member or friend looks after the children for at least part of the assessment.

7) If the report is about my child’s needs, does he or she need to be present for the whole assessment?

This depends. Very young children need only be present for part of the time. But it may be beneficial for older children to be present throughout, answering questions with your assistance. On the other hand, you and/or the lead therapist may want to discuss certain matters alone – and if this is impossible at the time, you can arrange to continue your conversation by phone.

8) Will the assessor want to see my scars?

Occupational Therapist Evaluations -The lead therapist will only look at scars that would normally be visible to strangers and will not put you under any pressure if you do not want to show them to him or her.

9) Will the assessor photograph my home or me?

Occasionally Rehab Logic therapists feel it would enhance the usefulness of the report if photographs of disfigurements or certain aspects of your home were included. Photographs would only be taken if the subject matter would be conveyed better in pictures than in words. The therapist will always seek your consent and ask you to sign a form, which sets out exactly how the pictures will be used and stored. The assessor will leave a copy of the agreement with you. You will not be put under pressure to allow the use of photography.

10) What should I do if I remember something I should have told you during the assessment after you have left?

Please send an e-mail to rl@rehabilitationspecialists.com detailing the information you want to pass on to the assessor that visited you and we will ensure it is forwarded to them. Alternatively please write to the OT at our office address or for more urgent messages telephone us on 0207 407 3000

11) Will I be able to see the report you write?

Your solicitor should show you a copy and will discuss the recommendations with you and the insurance company (or defendant solicitor) if appropriate, before negotiating funding to implement all or some of the recommendations.

12) What should I do if when I read the report I notice an error?

You should draw the error or any concerns you have about the report to your solicitor’s attention. Your solicitor will normally write to us and request us to carry out amendments he/she considers necessary. Factual errors will be corrected and consideration will be given to other points raised.

13) Do I have any guarantee that funds will be provided for all the recommendations in the report?

No. The Rehab Logic report will highlight what the lead Occupational Therapist believes to be your immediate needs. It is up to the organisation(s) commissioning the report to decide which recommendations they will fund.

14) If funding is provided, will I be compelled to accept rehabilitation?

No. Your informed consent will always be required. As part of our client-centred approach, you will be consulted throughout your rehabilitation. You will be involved in setting your goals and monitoring your progress - and you’ll never be forced to accept anything you're uncomfortable with.
