Rehab Results: a few recent success stories.

The only thing they have in common is that, as a result of a comparatively small outlay, the claimants have salvaged crucial aspects of their previous lifestyles.

Claimant: Female. 56. Shop assistant. Husband shift worker.
Injuries include: haematoma, leading to left-sided weakness. Wrist, ribs, leg and jaw fractured. Liver blood clot. A year elapsed before Rehab Logic was called in.
Consequences include: Frozen shoulder. Ataxic movements, exacerbated by fatigue. Short term memory problems.
Our recommendations:

  • Physio + OT.
  • Bathlift:
  • Straight Stairlift:
  • Pavement Vehicle:
  • Private Health Club fees:
  • One-to-One Swimming Lessons:
  • Case Management: 12 hours + 2 visits.
  • Liaising with employer about a phased return to work
  • Graded return to work.

Results: Despite the delay in instructing Rehab Logic, the claimant is doing well.

Claimant: Male. 36. Banker, doing MA in religious studies. Has young children.
Injuries include: Very severe head injuries.
Consequences include: Optic nerve damage. Slow speech. Ataxia.
Our recommendations:

  • Our consultant provided an expert assessment of the claimant’s immediate needs
  • She has given expert opinions as to what can be done for him.
  • She recommends intensive therapy in a residential Head Injuries unit coupled with:
  • The appointment of a Case Manager.

Results: Although unlikely to return to banking, the claimant will probably complete his MA and return to the workforce in another capacity.

Claimant: Female. Special-Needs Teacher. Husband self-employed.
Injuries include: Multiple fractures of upper and lower limbs. Burnt foot, with loss of two toes.
Consequences include: Pain. Impaired mobility. However, this person is highly motivated.
Our recommendations:

  • Lightweight wheelchair.
  • Low cost equipment e.g. raised toilet seat, which we have encouraged NHS to supply.
  • Replace bath with shower.
  • Private surgery, if there is an NHS waiting list.
  • Negotiated phased return to work. She is naturally concerned about boisterous pupils.

Results: Despite her injuries, the claimant anticipates a return to ‘normal’ life.

Claimant: Male. 42. Successful Banker. Motorcycle accident.
Injuries include: Lost use of dominant arm. Pain. Clinical depression.
Consequences include: Loss of confidence. Incapable of resuming former high-powered role.
Our recommendations:
Ergonomic workplace assessment.
Lessons in use of one-handed/voice-activated keyboard.
Cognitive behaviour therapy, linked with occupational guidance.
Physio + gym, walking, swimming etc., to increase stamina.
Results: Despite having suffered such a psychologically disabling event, the claimant is now taking positive steps towards working again.
